ENGLISH-IN-CAMP FOR PRIMARY AND SECONDARY SCHOOLS

GUIDELINES



1.0       RATIONALE
English-In-Camp (EIC) is aimed at promoting the use of English as a communicative tool in authentic situations. Students will enjoy themselves in a non-threatening and nurturing environment when using the language. EIC provides an environment where learning a language and experiencing cultural interchange will enrich the lives of the students.


2.0       AIM

EIC provides an avenue for participants to immerse themselves in an English- speaking environment via healthy, educational and enjoyable activities.



3.0       OBJECTIVES

3.1       The objectives of EIC are to enable participants to:

3.1.1   communicate effectively and confidently in the English language.

3.1.2     use the language in a conducive environment.

3.1.3     develop positive attitudes and values.

3.1.4     develop leadership qualities.

3.1.5     realize self-worth.

3.1.6     think critically and creatively in English.


4.0       TARGET GROUP

This camp is open to all Level 2 primary pupils / lower secondary students from government-aided schools in Malaysia. The students should possess an intermediate level of English Language proficiency. Participation includes:

4.1       a minimum of 4 boys and 4 girls per state – must be multi-racial to promote integration

4.2       1 male and 1 female teacher-in-charge per state

4.3       1 language officer per state

5.1       PRE-CAMP

            Suggested steps to be taken.

5.1.1     Hold meetings – set agenda

5.1.2     Establish Organising committee and Sub committees   
(Refer to Appendix A)

            5.1.3   Plan Funding / Budget


                        Under the jurisdiction of the Secretariat (Treasurer)

5.1.3.1        Plan the budget
5.1.3.2        Source funds
5.1.3.3        Document financial statement

5.1.4     Prepare module, camp rules / regulations and facilitator’s guide

5.1.5     Observe Formalities (Secretariat)

5.1.5.1        To obtain permit from relevant authorities e.g. PPD / Parents / Police / campsite operator
5.1.5.2        To inform relevant authorities e.g. JPN
5.1.5.3        To invite speakers / parents / VIP and relevant authorities and agencies e.g. NIE (Newspaper in Education), Army / Police, Uniformed bodies etc.

            5.1.6   Camp Equipment & Material
           
            All sub-committees should have a checklist of:

5.1.6.1        PA system, cassette / tape recorders, microphones, hailers,
                   bells / whistles, etc.
 5.1.6.2      Printed materials – song sheets, poetry, tongue twisters,
dialogue, jazz-chants, choral speaking scripts etc. if required
5.1.6.2        Tents, strings, canvas, mats, etc.
5.1.6.3        Campers’ log books
5.1.6.4        Other relevant material such as marker pens, manila cards, mahjong paper etc.
5.1.7     Other important details to consider:

5.1.7.1     Venue      :  Preferably a campsite
5.1.7.2        Duration  : 2 days + 1 night / 3 days + 2 nights / 4 days +    
  3 nights

5.2       DURING CAMP

5.2.1     Registration

5.2.5      Tour of campsite

5.2.6      Daily post-mortem meeting

 At the end of each day, the camp commandant, officials and facilitators  MUST have an evaluation / discussion session / meeting to prepare for the following day’s activities.

5.2.7     The Publicity Sub-Committee

The Publicity Sub-Committee can have the News Bulletin / Newsletters / Notices at the end of each day.

5.2.8     Others

5.2.8.1        Organizers are encouraged to have sessions for non-Muslim    participants such as Moral Instruction / Motivation / Self-Reflection while the Muslim participants are having their prayers.

5.2.8.2        Organizers may decide to run some of the activities in the form of              competitions and provide prizes to the winners e.g. best participation / best teamwork

5.2.9   Evaluation of the Camp

Evaluation by campers and facilitators is necessary to see the impact of the camp on the learning of English language. Feedback is useful for future EIC organisers. (Refer to Appendix B for sample of evaluation form)

5.3       POST CAMP

5.3.1   General cleaning of the campsite/rooms/dormitories/school/compound.

5.3.2   Returning of equipment and materials.

5.3.3   Post mortem and recommendations.

5.3.4   Letters of appreciation
5.3.4.1    All officials and facilitators
5.3.4.2    Donors (donations in cash or kind)
5.3.4.3    Foster parents
5.3.4.4    Other relevant parties

5.3.5   Reports

5.3.5.1    All Sub-Committees
5.3.5.2    Evaluation / feedback / post mortem
5.3.5.3    Financial statement of the camp
5.3.5.4    Comments, suggestions and proposals for future EIC


·                     This concept paper is valid until further notification or revision from the Ministry of Education and can be used at all levels for competitions organized by the Ministry.
